Leuven celebrates Thomas More: an array of special events

Leuven celebrates More: an array of special events. For three months, Leuven will be in the grip of Utopia. There will be events all over the city focused on innovation and discovery. So you will undoubtedly find a presentation, event, city walk or exhibition to excite you.

The programme of CITYWIDE festival includes exhibition, dance,music and citywalks:

  • From 20th October 2016 to 17th January 2017, visitors will be able to see more than 80 masterpieces as part of the exhibition In Search of Utopia during which the great masters of Thomas More’s period will be represented by their most important works.

  • Between the same dates, the ‘paper architecture’ exhibition EUTOPIA- POSSIBILITY OF AN ISLAND will be held. Five teams of leading Belgian architects and artists will present developments of their own Utopia: EUtopia - an island made out of paper during the exhibition.

  • From 30th September 2016 to 17th January 2017, visitors will be able to see Yto Barrada’s exhibition of photos, films and sculptures inspired by the archaeological discovery of dinosaurs in Morocco.

  • Yto Barrada will also come together with Ursula Biemann & Paulo Tavares, The Otolith Group, Allan Sekula and Adrien Tirtiaux in the exhibition Tracing the Future to critically explore the ecological, political and social impact of contemporary Utopia. This exhibition will occupy all of Leuven between 30th September and 20th November 2016.

  • Lastly, the Utopia & More exhibition, held from 20th October 2016 until 17th January 2017, will provide representations of valuable documents from the time of Thomas More in order to take the visitors back to the exciting period in which Thomas More lived.

  • During the festival a few dance and music events will be held in different locations around Leuven.
