Keynote speaker of the 17th International Conference of the Utopian Studies Society/Europe: Professo


Viriato Soromenho-Marques is a Professor at the Faculty of Arts at the Universidade de Lisboa and will be one of the keynote speakers at the upcoming USS Conference in July. He teaches Political Philosophy and European Ideas, as well as Philosophy of Nature and the Environment.

During his extensive academic career, Professor Viriato Soromenho-Marques has been active in many different societies and organisations based in Portugal and other countries across the world. He is a member of the Portuguese Philosophy Society, the International Society for Ecological Economics, the American Political Science Association and the Portuguese Association of Political Science.

For many decades now, he has been heavily engaged in defending the environment. Between 1992 and 1995, he was president of the largest Portuguese environmentalist association, QUERCUS – The National Association for Nature Conservation. In addition to this, from 1992 to 1996 he represented Portuguese environmental organisations at the Economic and Social Council. Since 2007, he has been advising the European Commission on sustainable energy and climate change as part of the High Level Group on Energy and Climate Change.

He has spoken at over 700 conferences all over the world and has published around 300 academic works on philosophy, international relations and the environment. We are delighted to welcome Professor Viriato Soromenho-Marques to the 17th International Conference of the Utopian Studies Society/Europe in Lisbon, where he will be presenting a paper entitled “The Utopia of the Ancients compared with that of the Moderns”.
